불멸의 신들을 신성하게 하는 의식을 올리고
그대들의 믿음을 간직하라.
빛나는 영웅들과 빛의 영혼들, 그리고 반신반인의 기억을 되살려라.
Be a good son, just brother; spouse tender,
and good father.
착한 아들, 올바른 형제, 다정다감한 배우자, 좋은 아버지가 되라.
Choose for thy friend, the friend of virtue;
Yield to his gentle counsels, profit by his life,
And for a trifling grievance never leave him;
친구를 고르되 착한 친구를 골라
그의 친절한 조언을 받아들이고,
그의 삶에서 교훈을 얻으며,
하찮은 불만으로 인해 결코 그와 헤어지지 말라.
If thou canst at least: for a most rigid law
Binds Power to Necessity.
만일 그대가 최소한 그렇게만 한다면
가장 굳센 법칙이 힘의 필요로 그대들을 묶어 줄 것이다.
Still it is given thee to fight and overcome
Thy foolish passions: learn thou to subdue them.
그대의 어리석은 열정과 싸우고 극복하기 위하여
그것은 아직 그대에게 주어져 있다.
그대는 그것을 복종시키는 법을 배우라.
Be sober, diligent, and chaste; avoid all wrath.
In public or in secret never permit thou
Any evil; and above all else respect thyself.
침착하고 부지런하고 순결하라.
그리고 모든 분노로부터 벗어나라.
공적으로나 사적으로나 그 어떠한 악도 허용하지 말라.
그리고 그 무엇보다도 그대 자신을 존경하라.
Speak not nor act before thou hast reflected;
Be just.
깊이 숙고하기 전에는 말하지 말고
행동하지도 말며 공명정대 하라.

Ordains to die;
기억하라, 정복할 수 없는 힘은
사라지도록 규정되어 있음을
...That riches and the honours
Easily acquired, are easy thus to lose.
쉽게 얻은 부와 명예들은 쉽게 잃어버리게 될 것이다.
As to the evils which Destiny involves,
Judge them what they are; endure them all and strive,
As much as thou art able, to modify the traits.
The Gods, to the most cruel, have not exposed the sage.
운명적으로 마주치게 되어있는 악에 대해서도
있는 그대로 판단하고, 그 모든 것을 다 참고 견뎌내며
그 기운을 변화시키는 것에 할 수 있는 한 최선을 다하라.
신들은 가장 잔혹한 것에 현명한 사람을 마주 세우지 않는다.
Even as truth, does Error have its lovers;
With prudence the Philosopher approves or blames;
If Error triumph, he departs and waits.
진리가 그러하듯이 실수에게도 사랑하는 연인들이 있다.
신중하게 철학자들에게 찬성하거나 반대하며
만일 잘못된 것들이 이기면 물러나 기다린다.
Listen, and in thine heart engrave my words;
Keep closed both eye and ear against prejudice;
Of others the example fear; think for thyself.
들어라. 그대의 가슴속에 나의 말을 새겨 담아라.
편견에 대해서는 눈과 귀를 굳게 닫아라.
다른 사람들의 선례를 두려워하라.
그리고 그대 스스로 생각하라.
Consult, deliberate, and freely choose.
의견을 묻고, 깊게 생각하며, 자유롭게 선택하라.
Let fools act aimlessly and without cause,
Thou shouldst, in the present, contemplate the future.
바보들은 아무런 목적 없이 그리고 아무런 이유도 없이
행동하게 내버려두고,
그대는 지금 미래에 대해 잘 생각해야 한다.
That which thou dost not know, pretend not that thou dost.
Instruct thyself: for time and patience favour all.
그대가 알지 못하는 것은 아는 척 하지 말고
그대 자신을 가르쳐라.
왜냐하면 시간과 인내는 모든 것을 가능하게 하기에.
Neglect not thy health...
건강을 소홀히 하지 말라.

Food to the body and to the mind repose.
육체에게는 음식을 그리고 마음에게는 평온을
적절하게 분배하라.
Too much attention or too little shun; for envy
Thus, to either access is alike attached.
선망하여 과도한 관심을 가지는 것이나
질투하여 너무 심한 회피를 하는 것은
그 어느 쪽이나 극단을 추구하는 것으로 집착과 같다.
Luxury and avarice have similar results.
One must choose in all things a mean just and good.
사치와 탐욕은 비슷한 결과를 가져온다.
그러므로 사람은 모든 일에서 공정하고 선한 방법을 택해야 한다.
Let not sleep ever close thy tired eyes,
Without thou ask thyself: What have I omitted,
and what done?
내가 무엇을 빠뜨렸고 무엇을 마쳤는가 라고
스스로에게 묻기 전에는
잠이 그대의 피곤한 눈을 덮지 못하게 하라.
그리고 깨어나는 순간 그대의 의무가 무엇이고
그대가 무엇을 완성해야 하는지 조용히 생각하라.
Abstain thou if 'tis evil, persevere if good.
그것이 악한 일이라며 끊고
그것이 선한 일이라면 꾸준히 노력하라
Meditate upon my counsels; love them, follow them:
To the divine virtues will they know how to lead thee.
나의 조언에 대해 명상하고
그것들을 사랑하며 그것을 따르라.
그것들은 그대를 신성한 미덕으로 인도할 것이다.
I swear it by the one who in our hearts engraved
The sacred Tetrad, symbol immense and pure,
Source of Nature and model of the Gods.
나는 그것을, 자연의 근원이자 신들의 형상이며
무한하고 순수한 상징인 신성한 네 원소를
우리의 가슴에 심어 새겨준 분의 이름으로 맹세한다.
But before all, thy soul to its faithful duty,
Invoke these Gods with favour; they whose aid,
Thy work begun, alone can terminate.
그러나 무엇보다도 먼저
그대의 영혼이 자신의 의무를 충실히 이행하게 하고 나서
그 신들을 호의를 간절히 기원하라.
오직 그 분들의 도움으로 시작된 일은 끝맺을 수 있다.
Instructed by them, naught shall then deceive thee,
Of diverse beings thou shalt sound the essence;
And thou shalt know the principle and end of All.
그 분들의 가르침은 결코 그대를 속이지 않을 것이니,
그대는 다양한 존재들의 근원적인 소리를 들을며
모든 것의 목적과 원리를 알게 될 것이다.
If Heaven wills it, thou shalt know that Nature,
Alike in everything, is the same in every place.
만일 하늘이 그것을 원한다면,
그대는 모든 것 속에 마찬가지로 존재하는 본바탕은
그 어디에서나 똑같다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.
So that, as to thy true rights enlightened,
Thine heart shall no more feed on vain desires.
그리하여 그대의 진정한 권리들을 밝게 알게 되면
그대의 마음은 더 이상 헛된 욕망들을 먹고살지 않게 될 것이다.
Thou shalt see that the evils which devour men
Are of their choice the fruit...

Seek afar the goodness whose source within they bear.
그대는 인간을 삼켜버린 악들이
인간 자신 스스로가 선택한 열매임을 보게 될 것이다.
그러나 사람들은 불행하게도
그들 자신 내부의 근원에 있는 선을 멀리서 추구한다.
For few know happiness: playthings of the passions,
Hither, thither tossed by adverse waves,
Upon a shoreless sea, they blinded roll,
Unable to resist or to the tempest yield.
행복을 아는 사람은 아주 드물다.
사람들은 단지 격정의 노리개일 뿐,
뒤집히는 물결을 따라 이리 저리 흔들린다.
그들은 사나운 파도에 저항하지도, 항복하지도 않고
눈 먼 채 해안이 없는 바다를 굽이쳐 흘러간다.
God! Thou couldst save them by opening their eyes.
신이여, 당신은 저들의 눈을 뜨게 해줌으로써
저들을 구원할 수 있습니다.
But no: 'tis for the humans of a race divine
To discern Error, and see the Truth.
그러나 그러지 마십시오. 잘못을 식별하고
진리를 깨닫는 것은 신성한 인간이 해야 할 일이기 때문입니다.
Nature serves them...
...Thou who fathomed it.
O wise and happy man, rest in heaven.
자연은 사람들을 섬깁니다.
그러나 그대가 그것을 헤아려 간파한 사람일 때,
오, 현명하고 행복한 사람은 하늘나라에서 쉰다.
But observe my laws, abstaining form the things
Which thy soul must fear, distinguising them well,
letting intelligence over thy body reign.
그러나 나의 법칙들을 준수하라.
그대의 영혼이 틀림없이 두려워할 종류의 것을 멀리하고
그것들을 잘 구분하여
지혜가 그대의 몸을 지배하게 하라.
So that, ascending into radiant Ether;
Midst the Immortals, thou shalt be thyself a God.
그리하여, 빛나는 에테르 속으로 날아 올라
불멸의 존재들 사이에서
그대 자신 스스로가 신이 되도록 하라.
