3. 지혜의 길과 영혼에 대하여
And on a morning as they walked in the Garden,
there appeared before the gate a woman, and it was Karima,
she whom Almustafa had loved even as a sister in his boyhood.
And she stood without, asking nothing,
nor knocking with her hand upon the gate,
but only gazing with longing and sadness into the Garden.
And Almustafa saw the desire upon her eyelids,
and with swift steps he came to the wall and the gate and opened unto her, and she came in and was made welcome.
그러던 어느 날 아침 그들이 정원을 산책하고 있을 때,
문 앞에 어떤 여인의 모습이 나타났고,
그 여인은 알무스타파가 소년시절에 누이동생처럼 사랑했던 카리마였다.
하지만 그녀는 손으로 문을 두드리지도 않고 아무 말도 없이
문 밖에 서서 갈망과 슬픔이 가득한 눈으로 정원을 바라보고 있을 뿐이었다.
그러자 알무스타파는 그녀의 눈 속에 담긴 갈망을 알아보았고
빠른 걸음으로 벽 쪽으로 가서 문에 이르러 그녀를 위해 문을 열어주었고,
그녀를 집으로 기쁘게 맞아들였다.
And she spoke and said:
"Wherefore have you withdrawn yourself from us altogether,
that we may not live in the light of your countenance?
For behold, these many years have we loved you
and waited with longing for your safe return.
And now the people cry for you and would have speech with you;
and I am their messenger come to beseech you
that you will show yourself to the people,
and speak to them out of your wisdom,
and comfort the broken of heart and instruct our foolishness."
그러자 그녀가 그에게 말했다.
"무슨 이유로 당신은 우리 모두를 피하고 있나요,
그렇게 하시면 우리는 당신 정신세계의 빛과 더불어 살아갈 수 없지 않나요?
생각해 보십시오. 우리는 오랜 세월동안 당신을 사랑해왔고
당신이 무사히 돌아오기만을 기원하며 기다려왔습니다.
그리고 지금 사람들은 당신을 절실히 필요로 하고
당신과 이야기를 나누고 싶어한답니다.
저는 당신이 사람들 앞에 모습을 드러내셔서
당신이 지혜로서 그들에게 말씀하셔서,
상처난 가슴들을 달래주고 우리의 어리석음을 깨우쳐 달라고
당신에게 간청하러 온 심부름꾼입니다."
And looking upon her, he said:
"Call me not wise unless you call all men wise.
A young fruit am I, still clinging to the branch,
and it was only yesterday that I was but a blossom.
"And call none among you foolish,
for in truth we are neither wise nor foolish.
We are green leaves upon the tree of life,
and life itself is beyond wisdom,
and surely beyond foolishness.
그러자 알무스타파는 그녀를 바라보며 말했다.
"그대가 모든 사람이 지혜롭다고 말하기 전까지는
나를 지혜로운 사람이라고 부르지 말라.
나는 아직 가지에 매달려있는 어린 열매에 지나지 않고,
어제까지만 해도 나는 한 송이 꽃에 지나지 않았노라.
그리고 그대들 중 그 어느 누구도 어리석은 사람이라고 부르지 말라.
왜냐하면 사실 우리는 지혜롭지도 않으며 어리석지도 않기 때문이다.
우리는 모두 생명의 나무에 매달린 푸른 잎들이며,
생명 그 자체는
지혜도 넘어서 있고 분명히 어리석음도 넘어서 있는 것이기에...
"And have I indeed withdrawn myself from you?
Know you not that there is no distance save that
which the soul does not span in fancy?
And when the soul shall span that distance,
it becomes a rhythm in the soul.
그리고 그대들이 내가 그대들을 멀리한다고 하지만
내가 진실로 내 자신을 그대들로부터 멀리했던가?
영혼이 우리 마음속으로 연결하지 못하는 거리를 제외하고는
그 어떤 거리도 있을 수 없다는 것을 그대는 알지 못하는가?
그리고 서로의 영혼이 연결되었을 때,
그것은 영혼 속에서 율동이 되지 않는가.
"The space that lies between you
and your near neighbour unbefriended is indeed greater than
that which lies between you and your beloved
who dwells beyond seven lands and seven seas.
"For in remembrance there are no distances;
and only in oblivion is there a gulf
that neither your voice nor your eye can abridge.
서로 서로를 돕지 않는 그대와 그대의 가까운 이웃 사이에 가로놓인 공간은,
일곱 대륙과 일곱 바다를 넘어서 살고있는
그대의 사랑하는 사람과 그대 사이에 가로놓인 공간보다도 실제로 더 큰 것이다.
왜냐하면 기억 속에는 아무런 거리가 없기 때문이니,
오직 그대들은 망각 속에서만 그대의 목소리와 그대의 눈빛으로도 줄일 수 없는
깊은 틈을 생기게 하기 때문이다.
"Between the shores of the oceans
and the summit of the highest mountain
there is a secret road which you must needs travel ere
you become one with the sons of earth.
"And between your knowledge and your understanding
there is a secret path which you must needs discover ere
you become one with man, and therefore one with yourself.
그리고 더 넓은 바닷가 해변들과 높은 산의 정상 사이에는
그대가 대지의 아들들과 하나가 되기 전에
반드시 여행해야 할 비밀스러운 길이 있노라.
그리고 그대의 지식과 그대의 이해 사이에도
그대가 진정한 인간과 하나가 되어
그렇게 그대자신과 더불어 하나가 되기 전에
반드시 깨달아야 할 비밀스러운 길이 있노라.
"Between your right hand that gives and your left hand
that receives there is a great space.
Only by deeming them both giving and receiving
can you bring them into spacelessness,
for it is only in knowing that you have naught to give
and naught to receive that you can overcome space.
또한 무엇인가를 주는 그대의 오른손과
무엇인가를 받는 그대의 왼손 사이에는 거대한 공간이 있노라.
그러므로 오직 그대가 이 두 손을 주는 손이자 동시에 받는 손으로 생각할 때에
그 두 손 사이의 공간을 없앨 수 있노라.
"Verily the vastest distance is
that which lies between your sleep-vision and your wakefulness;
and between that which is but a deed and that which is a desire.
하지만 진실로 가장 거대한 공간은
그대 꿈의 환상과 그대의 깨달음 사이에 가로놓인 공간이니,
그 공간 사이도 알고 보면
단지 그대의 욕망과 행위 사이에 가로놓인 공간에 불과한 것임을...
"And there is still another road
which you must needs travel ere you become one with Life.
But of that road I shall not speak now,
seeing that you are weary already of travelling."
그리고 그대가 생명과 하나가 되기 전에
반드시 여행해야 할 또 다른 하나의 길이 남아있노라.
하지만 나는 지금 이 길에 대해서는 말하지 않으리니
그것은 그대가 이미 여행에 매우 지쳐 있음을 내가 보았기 때문이니라.
Then he went forth with the woman, he and the nine,
even unto the market-place, and he spoke to the people,
his friends and his neighbours,
and there was joy in their hearts and upon their eyelids.
그 다음에 알무스타파는 그 여인과 함께,
그와 아홉사람이 밖으로 나와서 시장까지 걸어갔고
그곳에 있는 사람들과 그의 벗들과 그의 이웃들에게 말을 건넸고,
사람들의 가슴과 눈에는 기쁨이 서렸다.
And he said:
"You grow in sleep, and live your fuller life in you dreaming.
For all your days are spent in thanksgiving
for that which you have received in the stillness of the night.
"Oftentimes you think and speak of night as the season of rest,
yet in truth night is the season of seeking and finding.
"The day gives unto you the power of knowledge
and teaches your fingers to become versed in the art of receiving;
but it is night that leads you to the treasure-house of Life.
그리고 그가 말했다.
"그대들은 잠 속에서 성장하고 그대들의 전 생애를 꿈꾸면서 살아가노라.
왜냐하면 그대들은 밤의 정적 속에서 받은 것들을
감사의 기도를 드리며 너희들의 낮에 그것을 소비하며 보내기 때문이다.
그리고 흔히 너희들은 밤을 휴식의 계절이라고 생각하고 말하기도 하지만
사실 밤은 여전히 찾고 발견하는 계절인 것이다.
낮은 너희들에게 지식의 힘을 주고
그대들의 손가락들로 만지작거리며 받아들인 기술이 숙달되도록 해준다.
하지만 그대들을 생명의 보물창고로 인도하는 것은 밤인 것이다.
"The sun teaches to all things that grow their longing for the light.
But it is night that raises them to the stars.
"It is indeed the stillness of the night that weaves a wedding-veil
over the trees in the forest, and the flowers in the garden,
and then spreads the lavish feast and makes ready the nuptial chamber;
and in that holy silence tomorrow is conceived in the womb of Time.
태양은 빛을 갈망하며 자라나는 모든 것들을 가르친다.
하지만 이 모든 것들을 별들에게로 끌어올리는 것은 밤인 것이다.
실제로 숲 속의 나무들과 정원의 꽃들 위로 면사포를 씌우고
만찬을 베풀며 신혼방을 꾸미는 것은 밤의 고요이며
그렇게 성스러운 침묵 속에서 내일이 시간의 자궁속에 잉태되는 것이다.
'Thus it is with you, and thus, in seeking,
you find meat and fulfillment.
And though at dawn your awakening erases the memory,
the board of dreams is for ever spread,
and the nuptial chamber waiting."
이렇게 밤은 너희와 함께 있으면서 또한 구하게 해서,
너희들이 양식과 성취할 일을 찾게 한다.
그리고 비록 새벽이 와서 너희들이 잠에서 깨어나 기억들이 지워지더라도
꿈의 식탁은 영원히 차려져있고, 신혼방도 준비되어 있는 것이다.
And he was silent for a space, and they also, awaiting his word.
Then he spoke again, saying:
"You are spirits though you move in bodies;
and like oil that burns in the dark, you are flames though held in lamps.
"If you were naught save bodies,
then my standing before you and speaking unto you would be but emptiness,
even as the dead calling unto the dead.
But this is not so.
All that is deathless in you is free unto the day and the night
and cannot be housed nor fettered, for this is the will of the Most High.
You are His breath even as the wind that shall be neither caught nor caged.
And I also am the breath of His breath."
그리고 나서 그는 잠시 침묵을 지켰고 사람들은 그의 다음 말을 기다리고 있었다.
그 다음에 그는 다시 이렇게 말했다.
"그대들이 비록 육신 속에서 움직이고 있어도 그대들은 영혼들이니,
그리고 비록 램프에 담겨져 있지는 않지만
어둠 속에서 불타오르는 기름처럼 타오르는 불꽃이니라.
그리고 만일 그대들이 단지 육신 이외에 아무것도 아닌 존재라면
내가 그대들 앞에 서서 말하는 것은 마치 죽은 자가 죽은 자를 부르는 것처럼
단지 헛된 일에 지나지 않으리라.
하지만 너희들은 육신뿐인 단순한 존재가 아니로다.
너희 속에 있는 죽지 않는 모든 것은 낮이나 밤에 대해 자유롭고
또한 그것을 가두거나 속박할 수 없으리니
왜냐하면 그것이 가장 높으신 분의 뜻이기 때문이다.
그리고 잡히지도 않고 새장에도 가둘 수 없는 바람처럼,
너희들은 그분의 숨결인 것이다.
그리고 나 또한 그분이 내쉬는 생명의 숨결인 것이다.
And he went from their midst walking swiftly
and entered again into the Garden.
And Sarkis, he who was the half-doubter, spoke and said:
"And what of ugliness, Master? You speak never of ugliness."
그 말을 마치고 그는 사람들 사이에서 떠나
빠르게 걸어서 다시 그의 정원으로 돌아왔다.
그러자 반신반의하는 사람인 사르키스가 그에게 말했다.
"스승님, 그렇다면 추악함에 대해서는 어떻게 생각하십니까?
스승님께서는 한번도 추악함에 대해 말씀하시지 않으셨습니다."
And Almustafa answered him,
and there was a whip in his words, and he said:
"My friend, what man shall call you inhospitable
if he shall pass by your house, yet would not knock at your door?
"And who shall deem you deaf and unmindful if he shall speak to you
in a strange tongue of which you understand nothing?
"Is it not that which you have never striven to reach,
into whose heart you have never desired to enter,
that you deem ugliness?
"If ugliness is aught, indeed, it is but the scales upon our eyes,
and the wax filling our ears.
"Call nothing ugly, my friend,
save the fear of a soul in the presence of its own memories."
그러자 알무스타파는 그에게 대답했고
그의 말속에는 채찍이 들어 있었다.
"내 친구여, 그대를 아는 어떤 사람이 그대의 집을 지나쳐가면서도
그대의 문을 노크하지 않았다면
그 누가 그대를 손님을 냉대하는 야박한 사람이라고 하겠는가?
그리고 어떤 사람이 그대가 전혀 알아듣지 못하는 낯선 말로 그대에게 말을 한다면
그대가 그 말을 알아듣지 못했다고 해서
그 누가 그대를 귀머거리이고 부주의 하다고 하겠는가?
그대들이 그곳에 도달하려고 단 한번도 노력한 적이 없는 것,
누군가의 가슴을 열고 그 속으로 들어가려고 한번도 갈망하지 않은 것,
이것이 그대가 추악한 것이라고 생각하는 것이 아닌가?
만일 추악함이 실제로 존재하는 어떤 것이라면
그것은 우리들 눈에 생긴 눈꼽에 지나지 않고
우리들의 귀에 차있는 귀지에 지나지 않노라.
그러니 친구여,
눈앞에 나타난 그 자신의 기억으로 인한 영혼의 공포를 제외하고는
그 어떤 것도 추악함이라고 부르지 말라.

그리고 만일 그대들이 단지 육신 이외에 아무것도 아닌 존재라면
내가 그대들 앞에 서서 말하는 것은 마치 죽은 자가 죽은 자를 부르는 것처럼
단지 헛된 일에 지나지 않으리라.
하지만 너희들은 육신뿐인 단순한 존재가 아니로다.
너희 속에 있는 죽지 않는 모든 것은 낮이나 밤에 대해 자유롭고
또한 그것을 가두거나 속박할 수 없으리니
왜냐하면 그것이 가장 높으신 분의 뜻이기 때문이다.
그리고 잡히지도 않고 새장에도 가둘 수 없는 바람처럼,
너희들은 그분의 숨결인 것이다.
그리고 나 또한 그분이 내쉬는 생명의 숨결인 것이다.
And he went from their midst walking swiftly
and entered again into the Garden.
And Sarkis, he who was the half-doubter, spoke and said:
"And what of ugliness, Master? You speak never of ugliness."
그 말을 마치고 그는 사람들 사이에서 떠나
빠르게 걸어서 다시 그의 정원으로 돌아왔다.
그러자 반신반의하는 사람인 사르키스가 그에게 말했다.
"스승님, 그렇다면 추악함에 대해서는 어떻게 생각하십니까?
스승님께서는 한번도 추악함에 대해 말씀하시지 않으셨습니다."
And Almustafa answered him,
and there was a whip in his words, and he said:
"My friend, what man shall call you inhospitable
if he shall pass by your house, yet would not knock at your door?
"And who shall deem you deaf and unmindful if he shall speak to you
in a strange tongue of which you understand nothing?
"Is it not that which you have never striven to reach,
into whose heart you have never desired to enter,
that you deem ugliness?
"If ugliness is aught, indeed, it is but the scales upon our eyes,
and the wax filling our ears.
"Call nothing ugly, my friend,
save the fear of a soul in the presence of its own memories."
그러자 알무스타파는 그에게 대답했고
그의 말속에는 채찍이 들어 있었다.
"내 친구여, 그대를 아는 어떤 사람이 그대의 집을 지나쳐가면서도
그대의 문을 노크하지 않았다면
그 누가 그대를 손님을 냉대하는 야박한 사람이라고 하겠는가?
그리고 어떤 사람이 그대가 전혀 알아듣지 못하는 낯선 말로 그대에게 말을 한다면
그대가 그 말을 알아듣지 못했다고 해서
그 누가 그대를 귀머거리이고 부주의 하다고 하겠는가?
그대들이 그곳에 도달하려고 단 한번도 노력한 적이 없는 것,
누군가의 가슴을 열고 그 속으로 들어가려고 한번도 갈망하지 않은 것,
이것이 그대가 추악한 것이라고 생각하는 것이 아닌가?
만일 추악함이 실제로 존재하는 어떤 것이라면
그것은 우리들 눈에 생긴 눈꼽에 지나지 않고
우리들의 귀에 차있는 귀지에 지나지 않노라.
그러니 친구여,
눈앞에 나타난 그 자신의 기억으로 인한 영혼의 공포를 제외하고는
그 어떤 것도 추악함이라고 부르지 말라.
